Afraid (A Poem)

a mask I wear,
that people see,
a smile outside
says all is fine,
happy as can be.
just few can tell,
see when I fell,
help lift me too;
for deep inside,
though I’d tried,
is a fear so true.

just few can tell,
that mask apart,
find what is real,
ease my sorrow,
tell me I’ll heal.
that it isn’t easy,
but scars will fade,
and that it’s okay,
to feel so afraid.

wednesday verse light

As part of our resolution to write more poetry in 2018, Reema and I have started this weekly prompt we’ve decided to call as Wednesday Verses. Each Wednesday, we’ll be writing a poem based on the prompt of the week, and sharing a linky. We invite you all to join us with your own poems on the prompt. Write on your blogs, and link up with #WednesdayVerses. We are happy to have you rhyme with us. Welcome!

Prompt #4 is “AFRAID”

Please link up only if you’ve written a poem for the prompt!

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. It helps to get that mask off and have people validate you and see the real you. I’ve been less afraid over the years and don’t have a mask as much anymore. For most people, with me it’s what you see is what you get. But it has been a work in progress. Lovely lines as always Vinay!

    • Those people who recognize that real us are quite beautiful people. Most want a different version that suits them, I think. I’m trying to let go of that fear slowly, and I’m getting there, Babby. Like you said, it’s a work in progress.

  2. This is so incredibly evocative, Vinay! I guess we all have our masks which we wear .. that serves almost as a protective shield. How wise of you to state that only a few can tell that mask apart 🙂

  3. Vinay, it is okay to be so afraid. We all are afraid of things within and outside, the key is to control the fear and override it. Friends help with their support and encouragement. Touching poem. I feel, the one who laughs loudest, cries the most when alone. I have written a few haiku for the prompt.

    • Yes, Sulekha. It is okay to be afraid, absolutely. But at times, we forget that part and try to show we are strong always. Some friends get to know it and just call us out for it. Thankful for such people.

  4. How we all fake our lives to show the best to the world isn’t it? sometimes these emotions that bundle up leads to extreme steps.
Trying my hand out in poetry- a first for me. linking it up with you all. Thankyou

  5. Lucky are those who have people who can tell and care for when we aren’t feeling like ourselves.
And it is indeed okay to be afraid and sad because even the darkest hour lasts only 60 minutes.
