#29 – Rut Aa Gayi Re
If music is poetry, then the wordings make a lot of difference at times. This is a song I love for the lyrics, which is about the season of spring, and welcoming it. The kite festival at the beginning of spring is what is the cynosure of the picturization. Rut aa gayi re, rut chaa gayi re… the season has arrived and the season is spreading quickly everywhere. It moves to a love story, where the song compares the spring to the lover as well. The words describe spring and love so poetically, very much romanticizing it.
Add to these wonderful lyrics by Javed Akhtar, a tune set by the musical magician AR Rahman and the voice of Sukhwinder Singh, the song is complete. The magic and warmth of spring just spreads through the listener as well.
The part of the lyrics I love the most?
Geeton ki mauj aayi, phoolon ki fauj aayi,
Nadiyan mein jo dhoop guli, sona baha,
Ambva se hai lipti, ek bel bele ki
Tu hi mujhse hai duur, aa paas aa
Mujhko tu saanso se chuu le
Jhool in baahon ke jhoole
Pyaar thoda sa mujhe deke
Mere jaan o dil tu le
It translates toβ¦
The excitement of songs have come
And an army of flowers have arrived
Sunlight melts into the river, flows like gold
A vine grows around the mango tree
One you are distant from me, come closer
Touch me with your breath
And let me swing you in my arms
Give me some of your love
And take my heart and life in return
It’s still winter here, but listening to this song makes me eager for the first signs of spring already. Music can make us time travel, can’t it?
