#19 – O My Friend, from Happy Days
I have always wanted to learn Telugu, but not got around to it. It’s not that easy to learn a language perhaps, or maybe I’ve not got the time or discipline to. Telugu was quite prominent in my college days, with so many of my classmates and batchmates quite fluent in speaking it. Though their influence didn’t reflect in my learning, it definitely influenced my music. This was a song that I heard and loved before quite a few of my classmates did. The movie was a popular one as well.
I relate to this song a lot because of the way friendship has played a part in my life. The lyrics of this song are quite powerful in expressing a strong friendship. I’ve continued to hear it often, and over time, the lyrics have become quite stuck in my mind. And the tune too, of course.
The part of the lyrics I love the most?
Ontaraina, Ootamaina
Venta nadiche needa vena
It translates to…
In loneliness or defeat
I am the shadow that walks along with you
I have few such friends who mean the world to me. It’s wonderful, how music can touch hearts, isn’t it?

Happy Days was a phenomenon when it came out. And the music was much more bigger.

Yes, Jb, I know. I got the music before most of my classmates did. It was that good. 🙂
I like the malayalam version of it, obviously because I understand the language. The music and the setting kind of reminds me of school and friends and that is the reason the song always manages to put me in a good mood.

I know. I like both, but I heard Telugu first, so this made more of an impact, I think, Ishi. 🙂 It’s a very nostalgic song.
