#18 – My Heart Will Go On
I’m not a big movie buff. I prefer the company of books and songs mostly. There are some movies, however, that I can watch again and still enjoy them. The Harry Potter series, or Kal Ho Na Ho, or The Avengers… to name a few. One such movie I love watching is Titanic. There’s a scene in the sitcom FRIENDS where Chandler mentions that Joey cries every time someone talks about Titanic. The movie was that good, and still continues to be watched by many. I’m one among that many.
I remember watching the movie on TV, on New Year’s Eve, 1999. It was one of the “midnight” shows, that ended 1 minute before midnight and preceded a countdown to the turn of the new Millennium. I remember this song from then, and it has been part of my playlist after that. The romantic song is said to have been the #1 song all over the world back then, and to date is one of Celine Dion’s best singles. I love the song not just for that Millennium memory, but because of the lyrics, the music and the power of Celine Dion’s vocals in the song. The mix of the three is what makes the song work so well, I feel.
The part of the lyrics I love the most?
Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go ’til we’re gone
If there ever was a song that makes the listener go back to the movie it was in, it is this one. Just the opening instrumental section is sufficient for me to remember the movie, and the scenes. And at times, like Joey, a tear comes to my eye as well. Music has that innate quality to touch hearts.
