#16 – Har Ghadi

The first ever audio cassette I purchased of a Hindi movie was of this movie Kal Ho Na Ho. I’m not a big movie buff. It’s very rare that I fall in love with a movie, and I never had a lot of expectations from this movie when my friend brought the video cassette along when he came to visit. It was, and still is, one of my favorite movies. When our class group in college wanted to dance to one of the songs in the movie, I took the chance and offered to buy the audio cassette. With two left feet, I wouldn’t contribute as a dancer of course. They danced to the song Mahi Ve, but the song I loved a lot was this one.

Har Ghadi is a very inspiring song, with lyrics penned by poet and lyricist extraordinaire Javed Akhtar. I love good melodies, and this ranks right up there with the best of them. Sonu Nigam’s soulful voice is a perfect fit for the song too.

The part of the lyrics I love the most?

Har ghadi badal rahi hai roop zindagi
Chhaav hai kabhi, kabhi hai dhoop zindagi
Har pal yahan, jee bhar jiyo
Jo hai sama, kal ho na ho

It translates to…

Every moment, life is changing,
At times there is shade, at times it’s sunny,
Every moment here, live it to the fullest,
This moment might not be there tomorrow.

The song also asks us to take our chances, if we find that special someone who loves us wholeheartedly and whose face comes to us in the corner of our eyes every time. And that’s important, of course. But it’s this opening verse that has stuck in my head since the first time I heard it. Don’t focus on the past or the future, but just live in the present moment, and live it to the fullest.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
