#11 – Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka

Family means a lot to me. They say the love a family is the greatest blessing, and I agree. Most of my friends know that the family member I’m closest to is my younger sister. Growing up together, attending the same school, being each other’s friend through school and even after… the bond between us has only strengthened over time. We’ve a lot in common too, the kind of books we love to read, the memories we share, the food we like and such. It’s no surprise that one my favorite days of the year is Rakshabandhan, the festival that celebrates our bond as brother and sister.

This song is one that proves the saying, Old is Gold. The lyrics talks of a brother’s love for his sister, I feel, and the character of Prashant, portrayed in the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna by Dev Anand, is a very strong brother character as well. It’s a movie that released nearly two decades before I was born, but one which I’ve seen. I love the song because of its lyrics, composed by Pancham da (RD Burman).

The part of the lyrics I love the most?

Phoolon ka taaron ka, sabka kehna hai
Ek hazaar mein, meri behna hai
Saari umar hamey sang rehna hai

It translates to…

The flowers and the stars, they all say,
That my sister is one in a thousand,
That we’re inseparable as long as we live.

I think my sister is one in a thousand too, maybe even rarer than that. Even writing about this song, about us, makes me happy, and that’s what music does more often than not. It makes me happy.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
