#10 – Chinna Chinna Aasai

There are occasions when a movie is really amazing, and every song in that movie becomes a favorite. One such movie that I love is the movie Roja. The first of Mani Ratnam’s “terror trilogy”, the movie is one that many people still remember for its storyline. It’s one of the best movies ever, I feel, and the soundtrack of the movie is among the 10 best soundtracks of all time, as listed by TIME magazine in 2005.

The song Chinna Chinna Aasai reminds me of childhood, of the innocence of wishes we had then. I think it’s because of that that the song won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics for the lyricist Vairamuthu. The movie won AR Rahman the National Film Award for Best Music Direction as well, and it was with tis movie that the legend made his way into the film world. I love the song for the lyrics, the tune and the way the artist has rendered it. Even to this day, Minmini is remembered for this song more than anything else.

The part of the lyrics I love the most?

malligaip poovaai maarivida aasai
thenralaik kandu maalayida aasai
maegangalaiyellaam thottuvida aasai
soagangalaiyellaam vittuvida aasai
kaarkuzhalil ulagaik kattivida aasai
chinna chinna aasai siragadikka aasai
muththu muththu aasai mudindhuvida aasai

It translates to…

I wish to turn into jasmine
and to garland the wind
I wish to touch the clouds
and leave all my sorrows
I wish to trap the world
in the locks of my hair
Little little wishes, to fly,
These wishes like pearls
I wish to hide inside

It’s a beautiful feeling to travel back in time and recollect those small, naive dreams then, something that felt like the world to us. It’s even more beautiful that that is possible through the words of a song. No wonder music helps us to escape the reality we live in.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
