#9 – Only Hope

I’m not a very religious person, but I am spiritual. Very few spiritual songs appeal to me though. One of the rare exceptions is this one. I’ve heard that Switchfoot were initially popular in the Christian rock genre. Maybe this song was one of that. I heard it when a friend shared it on her Facebook timeline.

“Only Hope” doesn’t initially feel like it’s a song to God. Only when I read the lyrics online did I think that it could be. It’s rare that I fall in love with a song because of three lines in it, but in this case, that’s what happened. The opening three lines somehow grabbed my attention and that was that.

The part of the lyrics I love the most?

There’s a song that’s inside of my soul
It’s the one that I’ve tried to write over and over again
I’m awake in the infinite cold

I relate to that. I think most writers would be able to relate to these three lines. That untold story inside that keeps us awake, yet we’re unable to express it satisfactorily. That’s what these lines initially spoke to me, and it has repeated that since then.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
