Thankful Tuesdays #26 – Meeting authors

Someone I Got To Meet

Week 26 – Thankful Tuesdays

My love for reading is quite known. It is only recently though that I started to go for book launches and signings. I’ve to thank a very dear book friend for that. In this year, I’ve gone to two such meets. I’m thankful to have met both authors for completely contrasting reasons.

I think Jeffrey Archer is an author whose name is well known the world over. I’d read just a little from Kane and Abel, which is considered his best work, before going to the launch of the latest book of The Clifton Chronicles. I’m glad I did, because I was bowled over by his oratory skills. From the time he entered the building, till he sat down for the book signing, he held the attention of the audience, and made them feel at home. He was quite patient to answer questions and even overruled the host of the meet to let me ask a question at the end. I wish he had had time to personalize the sign though.

I’m glad to have met Amitav Ghosh at the signing and launch of Flood of Fire. Like Jeffrey, I’d read just one of his earlier books, The Calcutta Chromosome before that day. Whereas Jeffrey Archer’s signing was more hurried toward the end, Amitav Ghosh sat patiently waiting for his fans, and chatted amicably with them while signing the book. He was happy to pose for pictures too. The day was doubly delightful for me because I also ended up meeting another author who I admire, Sudha Murty. I even got her autograph, and that mattered a lot to me.

If it hadn’t been for books and meets, and that friend of course, I’d not have had two fantastic days in the year. I’m thankful for all of that. I’m happy recollecting the memories too.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
