Things I Like About Summer

Week 21 – Thankful Tuesdays

OK. Summer is the season I dislike the most. I wilt with the heat. And especially this year, the heat feels scorching. There was a time I loved summers perhaps. School days would be spent waiting for the blessed season so I could go out of town with my parents and I had nothing to do but play with my friends for two whole months, with the odd holiday homework thrown in between. Ah! Those were the days. We lose many things growing up, and a love for summer seems to be one of those things for me.

mangoes

I guess one thing I love about summer is that it’s the season of mangoes. It’s when mom makes more lemonade than usual and it’s really yummy… very little sugar and a pinch of salt as well. I love that my neighbor’s kids have vacation and they are there in the compound when I return home, playing without a care. The younger one talks to me happily and shows off her new school uniform and such. It takes a load off my mind to speak to her. Ice creams taste better in summer, the cold drops of vanilla or chocolate slipping down my throat.

Yeah… some things to like about summer, though the heat seems to overwhelm all of them.

Poetry & writing to me are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. Okay, I’m gonna go get meself some mangoes now. Or some lemonade. Or both.

And I could have written this post, same ‘love’ for summer we have 😀

  2. Summer is here in full glory and this time it is a bit too much to take. Takes me back to the summers twenty years ago, where we used to run around and play, despite the blazing summer heat. But today summer means nothing else apart from the sweat and the sweat and the sweat.

And mangoes, yes. Well every stinky cloud does have a sweet lining somewhere 🙂

  3. There are two big mango trees in my garden and they keep home cool and airy even in scorching summer heat. To eat ripened mangoes of own tree is such a bliss. Grandma and mom makes so many mango recipes and my favorites are mango shake and mango flavored ice-cream ^_^
