Thankful Tuesdays #20 – My Best Friend

Written as part of 52 Weeks of Gratitude Challenge which I’m attempting this year.

A(nother) Friend

Week 20 – Thankful Tuesdays

“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.” – Muhammad Ali

Sometimes, I wonder what friendship is; and if I am a friend to anyone. It’s only when there’s an overwhelming sense of loneliness that those thoughts come out. Friends have come and gone so often. It’s hard to be myself at times. It’s even harder when it’s friendship through words. What you say in jest might be taken in a completely different way because the voice is missing, and the smile in that voice is missing.

So it’s a priceless friendship that is born when the words are understood and the voice, even without the voice, is heard. Such a friend is not found every day. I hadn’t met her till just a week back, but it wouldn’t be off to say that our friendship was as close as it could have been had she been near me, had we met often. It’s priceless when a friend from afar knows and understands you such that it’s almost as good as a sibling’s understanding of you. And a nickname to the friendship is found that reflects that.

I cannot put parameters on our friendship. Or tell why we are best friends. But we are. Maybe it’s because we relate to each other on so many levels… choices of food, a love for books or even how much we love our siblings. We’re both passionate about writing too. Maybe it’s a mix of all that. In the end, it just makes a big difference that she is there for me, and I for her. It’s that presence which matters, both to help through the testing times and in celebrating the good ones. It’s that which puts things into perspective, the little things that matter… making sure the other is okay, and if not, trying to do so, pushing each other to do the best, teasing each other and such.

I am glad that you are there with me. It’s wonderful to realize the meaning of friendship through our friendship. I’m glad we are connected by books, and I hope that never changes. And I definitely hope we meet again. I’ve told this once before, that you are a blessing in my life. Thank you for being there, Ishi.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. Yes yes yes… yes to every word you wrote 🙂 I am gloating here!! Imagine!!! I am talked about, in one whole post.. that too on Leo’s blog 🙂 🙂

You who make words alive, have written so wonderfully about your best friend… you make me wonder if I am really all those things you say. I have just one prayer, that I need to be there for them even before they realize that they need someone by them. I try, but not successfully always. I console myself, I am not God, but a mere mortal with multiple faults in me.

People around me have always found it difficult to judge my mood or the tone of my words, yet you who sit so far, know me much more than all of them put together. I am so glad we ‘met’, even before we met.

I hope that we meet again… definitely we will, this is a small world 🙂
Till then, like you said, we keep meeting in books and words 🙂 🙂

  2. So sweet 🙂 Real friendship is hard to find and even harder to sustain. Looks like you both have gotten lucky that way 🙂
