I’m Sorry …

I usually try to write on time for Blog-a-Ton, but I’ve been in a rut, and sometimes the idea flashes a bit too late. Traveling on a national highway, I’ve seen a fair few accidents happen, and I’ve wondered why people are in such a hurry that they don’t see. If only they did… if only.

The streetlights slowly flicker to life. First one, then another, but the third just glows an orange tinge. It has lived its life.

As have I.

It’s strange, but I’ve never noticed the streetlights before.

The fourth one flashes in the distance.

My life flashes before my eyes.

A younger me. Four years younger, to be precise. I stand below the college arch. No. I’m leaning on a bike. It’s my friend’s. A minute passes. Then I drive away. The first “official” drive after I got my license.

A younger me. Two years younger, to be precise. This same road. That old bike I’d bought off my friend. She riding pillion. Our laughter as the rain starts to fall. The first “official” drive as boyfriend – girlfriend.

A younger me. Yesterday, to be precise. This same road. The last time in my college bus. My friends and I play antakshari. Our bus driver has a smile too. Neatly filed, in my bag, is my appointment letter. To my dream IT company.

It’s strange. I remember this road. But I’ve never noticed the streetlights before.

Today, it’s because of you I notice it.

Today, you knocked me down as I crossed this road. I remember the trees on the side looking like a blur as I went down.

As these breaths, my last ones, leave me, I look beyond the streetlights into the sky. I hear the horns blaring as they go past me. I taste the blood that trickles down from my nose, drop by drop. I feel the cold winter breeze bring the fragrance of incense.

And I’m sorry.

I’m sorry you had a life, and to you, I didn’t.

I’m sorry you have a life, and now, I don’t.

Yesterday, my colleagues and I saw a guy collapse in the middle of the road, fall back and hit his head. We couldn’t stop near enough to help him, but as we passed him, I saw that his still gaze was straight up. We looked back and saw that he was helped by the vehicle behind us. But we knew it was a lost cause. Don’t know how it happened, if it was a hit-and-run or just a coincidence. But it makes one think.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. It never makes sense when people just run over others. True they must think that no one else matters. I am sorry you had to see the accident happen though. Seeing such things always leaves me in a horrible tizzy.

    • I’ve seen that attitude a lot, Jb. I’ve been hit on a pavement once, by a car that tried to use even the edge of the road. Sometimes, people are so careless, it makes me sad.

  2. Its so sad. In their hurry to reach somewhere, people knock people down and go on. Not realizing or perhaps running away before they can realize what they have done and its impact on the people around the one who was hit. We have been involved in a very gruesome accident and I can still remember the gory details. I still get nightmares.
I am sorry you had to see this particular accident though.

    • I’ve been involved in a couple of accidents, witnessed numerous others. I don’t get nightmares, but it’s not something you forget easily. And yes, too much hurry around. Even I’m sorry I had to see that particular accident too, Bhavs.

  3. It really hurts to see a little carelesness taking over precious life. A few days back I saw an accident of a girl of my age. She came under the truck on highway. The incident makes me shiver at the very thought.
Intrigued writing and am glad to see this thoughtful side of yours 🙂

    • It hurts to see carelessness taking a life, absolutely. Hope you are okay after seeing that, Sims. It affects us in some unseen way sometimes.

  4. human life is very CHEAP in todays world, we have become so Inhuman that such things have become Common now .. and the worst part is that in this case someone stopped usually no one even bothers to stop

    • I wouldn’t say it’s the worst part that someone stopped, Biks. It’s good. Atleast shows there is some humanity left in humans. But I agree with you, life seems to have become very cheap indeed.
