Truly Independent?

Independent India
are we completely?
proud I am, for sure
for I am an Indian
but from what I ask
are we independent?

we had fought hard
valiantly with heart
to stop taking orders
a new nation to start
yet has our freedom
been truly achieved
hasn’t our self control
metamorphosed to greed?

independent are we?
forgetful even of respect
that our India deserves
even that we neglect
an anthem we do sing
standing with pride
yet some just don’t care
hasn’t respect then died?

politics corruption high
it still continues to rise
where unity is needed
the world fills with lies
to abolish these flavors
we begin another fight
will “an eye for an eye”
diminish such a plight

independent are we?
of hopelessness and fear
once slaves of others
and now of those dear?
what change has come?
we still can’t stop crime
just the “of who” I feel
different from that time

let’s be fully respectful
of martyrs of our land
let us unite diversely
get love hand in hand
let’s lose fear from minds
and battle crimes we see
till a day all feels right
independent we can be

we are free, our Bharat
we have progressed a lot
to look further ahead
these fears must be forgot
we must unite all fronts
show to all where we are
total our independence
and still reach for stars

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. a very moving poem. i especially loved the lines “once slaves of others
and now of those dear?” very well said. i personally feel that people who cant respect their National Anthem cant respect their nation ever.sometimes i feel like doing something very special for my country. you know, something to change its current state. i hate dishonesty.
have listened to the new National Anthem? MAST hai. i listened to it all day yesterday. its awesome 🙂

    • I haven’t listened yet, but will give it a hearing soon, Kirti 🙂 Thank you. And yes, some issus of dishonesty and disrespect are always around.

  2. you ask some hard questions here, it is not easy to recover from oppression & control is it even possible? I am sure this is going to do well in your poetry contest good luck!
