Traditional New Year

Adorned with fresh flowers, anointed with sandal paste
Panorama of auspicious items, prepared in no haste
Reverence to Him shown, rendering prayer at dawn
Invoking His blessings now, inspiring that first sight
Loved ones come together, lucky traditional year begins

Vishu is the traditional New Year for Keralites the world over, celebrated in April each year.
Written for Months of the Year Challenge, April, hosted by Lady Nimue.

Poetry & writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.

  1. Do open your eyes at dawn in the pooja room and feast on Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhapachadi (a sour mango soup) and be blessed with prosperity.
