“Understand this Jeffers, our island countries are small, so the other countries of the world might try to conquer us by war”, said Nestor to me. He was the leader of Vannia, the island nation neighboring to Durnsden Island, which I ruled.
“Now, Nestor let us not be hasty in thought. We’ve never bothered with them before. They might leave us alone too.”
“I hope to heaven you are right Jeffers, but precaution isn’t a waste.”
“True. What are you suggesting that we do Nestor? Does Vannia seek an alliance with Durnsden if such an event should occur?” I asked.
“Exactly… our forces aren’t that huge when they are taken individually, but together we’d be able to put up a fight.”
“Denying you won’t be right. Just as a precaution, I’ll take that offer. Our nations unite for the safety of our citizens”, I said.
Next day, Nestor flew over and we both signed the document promising our loyalties in case of a military emergency.
“Alliance of friendship and trust, that’s what this is Jeffers”, he said, and filling a glass with champagne, toasted to the unity.
The need for that pact soon became evident, as Nestor’s fears were realized. Sensing opportunity at an easy kill, an alliance of other nations launched an attack on Durnsden.
I ordered the navy and air force to begin the defense of our nation. As they flew onward, the sound of more jets echoed through the air as Vannia Air Force joined our efforts. We fought a battle that raged on for a week. After that, the enemy retreated seeing our combined efforts.
Once over, they tried to take out Vannia next, but again our unity held strong. We had protected our citizens from harm.
News of our unity spread. There were further attempts to conquer the two island nations, but we resisted each attack in unison. Nestor and I were hailed for the pact that we made.
Showing unity helped our two nations get peace. We were, however, left wondering about how beautiful the world would be if all nations united in a quest for peace.
