Third Chronicle… continued from Part4
The four of them alighted at the airport, and to their surprise found a car waiting for them. It said Kolkata Press Club in the windshield, so they thought the press had somehow got wind of the accident and wanted to get a first hand account from Cat herself. They got in, and were driven away. The full moon was out tonight, and the night seemed calm and tranquil.
They four of them sitting in the back of the Sumo began to talk about Cat’s dream. Cat explained the dream just as she saw it, but she was happy that it was over. Vipin and Atul comforted her saying that it was ok and they were glad no one was hurt. When they turned, they saw that they were well past the city limits and that the highway was quite empty. Their driver was going very fast. Atul leaned front and questioned the driver, who said he was just taking them to where he was asked to take them. Atul tried to take over the control and the driver had to just pull over and stop himself from getting hurt. When he got out, Neel, Atul and Vipin accosted him and demanded to know who had given orders to him. He was scared. “Sir, please don’t hurt me, I am not any criminal. They told me I have to do it. It was him sir. It was…”
Before he could finish the sentence, a shot rang through the dead of night. The driver fell down, a bullet through his heart killing him on the spot. They turned and saw a black car there, an Omni with 4 men standing outside. One of them held the gun, and the others approached them. The guy asked them to get inside the Sumo. They didn’t risk it, and got in. The man with the gun got in front, and another guy took the wheel. They drove again in the still of the night. Cat watched the winding road with anxiety, but not of their destination. She knew where they were being taken to, and oddly enough, even felt sure she knew their host. A mile later and she was proved right. The gates opened and at the entrance of the mansion, was a sleek black Esteem. At the door, two more goons on either side of him was the man she last saw a month back in this very mansion. Dressed fully in white, he stood out in the night, looking very sadistic.
“Hello my dear niece. It has not been long since we met has it?” asked her uncle, Chinmay Tripathy. She did not reply. Her uncle smiled, and nodded to the goons. They whisked her away to a room and threw her into it. To her surprise, Atul was thrown in her room too but Neel and Vipin were in another room. It was the same room they had put her in last month. Her uncle followed them inside. “Cat, do you really think I’d leave you just like that? Last time I had not intended to kill you, but this time I will. I’ll kill you inch by inch. Try anything silly and I’ll start with your friends in the other room.”
She shuddered, not wanting to imagine that at all. When he went out and the door closed, Cat went to the little balcony and gazed at the moon. “Moon, they say you take all the sorrows away before the morning. I beg you to take away mine”, she whispered, a single tear sliding down her cheek. Atul came behind her, wiped it away and took her hand to comfort her. “It will be ok. Get some sleep and dream of us becoming free tomorrow morning; your dreams usually come true”, he said, trying to keep his voice even.
She went to the bed and lied down. Atul stayed at the balcony, thinking of what to do. A minute later, he heard her scream. Turning around, he saw her with her back to the wall, pointing a finger at something. His eyes followed her index finger… and they became wide as a mixture of surprise and shock took over him.
