A word that I heard, such a lot today,
Independence, my country got 61 years to this day,
I am a proud Indian, yes indeed,
I respect those men, who for this country bleed.
Yet a question, comes to my mind,
Do we respect the country, just this one day?
On other days, around me I see,
Many a person, with this respect play
An anthem we have, such inspiring words,
I stand still; respect it when I hear,
Yet many a person around, laugh at me,
Sitting comfortably, with not even a little fear
On the television, I can only see,
News of politics corrupt, religions that fight
They say we are independent and free,
Yet why are we not, free from this plight?
In the newspapers, I can read,
Of rapes, and murders, everyday,
We can’t walk after dark, without fear,
We aren’t yet free, chained still to fears are we today.
The day we respect, those who die for this land,
When we can live together, unbound by religion hand in hand,
When no fear in our heart, no troubles can we see,
I feel, that day, is when we can call ourselves—free.
Happy Independence Day to All…!!
